Why Plan Your Word Count?

Facing a blank page can feel overwhelming. But when you break your word count into clear, bite sized sections, writing becomes far easier to manage.

Planning ahead helps you:

  • Stay focused

  • Use your time efficiently

  • Avoid spending too many words in one part and too few in another

  • Build a clear, balanced structure

Instead of guessing as you go, you will know roughly how much to write in each section and paragraph. This structure takes the pressure off, making it easier to get started.

How Should You Divide Your Word Count?

Before writing, it is useful to know how much of your total word count to  put into each section of your essay. Here is a simple guide:

  • Introduction – About 10%
Sets up your topic and tells the reader what to expect.

  • Main Body – About 80%
Explains your ideas and evidence in detail.

  • Conclusion – About 10%
Sums up your essay and reminds the reader of your main message.

Breaking Down the Main Body Paragraphs

The main body usually includes three to five paragraphs, depending on the total word count and how many key points you plan to make. Each paragraph should focus on a different idea or key point, explained with evidence and examples. This way, every 300–350 words develops one part of your overall argument.

Here is a breakdown to guide you:

For a 1500 word essay:

Introduction: 150 words

Main Body: 1200 words

  • Paragraph 1: 300 words
  • Paragraph 2: 300 words
  • Paragraph 3: 300 words
  • Paragraph 4: 300 words

Conclusion: 150 words

These are estimates, not exact figures. You may write a slightly longer paragraph if a point needs more explanation. The key is balance.
