Conclusion
This case study demonstrates that Inspiration Mind Mapping software can effectively support student learning by enhancing organisation, clarity, and engagement with academic tasks. The students reported increased confidence, positive attitudes toward mind mapping, and recognition of its practical applications for planning assignments, brainstorming, and structuring research. The findings suggest that integrating visual learning tools like Inspiration can provide a flexible and inclusive approach to study, supporting students across disciplines and promoting more active, structured, and creative learning practices.
It is important to acknowledge, however, that this case study was carried out with lecturers and students across two disciplines (31 individuals in total) within a short project timeframe and with limited resources. The training and data collection were conducted by the author, and accordingly, it is recognised that the findings may not be entirely free from bias. The availability of the tool, for a one-year period, also limited data collection opportunities. Further research exploring the potential applications of Inspiration Mind Mapping software amongst TUS staff and students is recommended to strengthen understanding of the tool’s impact and benefits.
Future considerations
The positive feedback from students suggests that continued access to the software could support learning across a range of modules, particularly in subjects that involve complex concepts and structured assignments. Students noted that the visual format helped them organise their ideas and understand connections between topics, which can be helpful when planning essays, presentations, or project work.
With the one-year software licence concluding soon, ongoing access is recommended to allow broader integration across modules and continued development of students’ study skills. Given the potential value of mind mapping approaches amongst our student cohorts, there is also merit in exploring no- and low-cost alternatives if funding cannot be secured to continue using the dedicated tool, Inspiration Mind Mapping software, used throughout this case study. At the time of writing, Canva facilitates the creation of mind maps within its free package. It should be noted, however, that such tools usually have limited functionality and the longevity of access is uncertain; therefore, a dedicated tool that will be accessible over the longer term is undoubtedly preferable.
