Abstract
The Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II) and the Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire (BRSQ) are methods for assessing the regulation of motivation in sport, based on the Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985). The aim of this research was to examine and compare the psychometric properties of both scales.
Reliability was accepted in most of the BRSQ validations, but in the SMS-II validations, reliability problems were found in introjected, external and amotivation regulation.
The BRSQ presented convergent validity problems in the integrated and identified regulation factors. Discriminant validity issues were also identified between the external and introjected, identified and integrated, integrated and intrinsic and amotivation and external regulation factors. SMS-II revealed convergent validity problems with all the motivation regulation factors and discriminant validity issues with the intrinsic, integrated, identified and introjected, integrated and identified, integrated and introjected, identified and introjected and introjected and external regulation factors.
When analysing the fit of the models, not all of them showed acceptable values at first glance for both scales. In these cases, errors were correlated, items were eliminated and scales with fewer factors regulating motivation were validated.
