How the OER service has evolved in TUS

Key milestones in the evolution of Open Education, and specifically Open Educational Resources (OER), in the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) Library are outlined here

2020 Fund and Create

  • Funding – National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (National Forum) funding secured
  • OER Index  the funding facilitated the creation of an OER Index using WordPress to showcase OER resources for all disciplines
  • OER Library Guide – to increase awareness of OER and open licensing

2021 Engage Staff

  • Staff Engagement promotion of the OER Index and LibGuide and empowerment of staff to locate and use OER in their teaching OER
  • Staff Surveyconducted and results shared in TUS
  • Pressbooks – pilot and testing of Open Book platform, Pressbooks

2022 Build an Infrastructure

  • DOERs Project – funding secured from the National Forum
  • Pressbooks – TUS Pressbooks network deployed
  • Staff Training – promote the benefits of OER for teaching, including cost, accessibility and scope to provide multiple means of engagement

2023 Collaborate

  • DOERs Project Launch – DkIT, MU, TUS and SETU collaboration
  • Conference Dissemination – EdTech conference
  • Dedicated Role creation of OER Librarian post
  • Survey – development of aligned staff OER surveys for DOERs sites
  • Staff Training – advocating for the inclusion of OER in reading lists

2024 Share and Grow

TUS

  • TUS OER Library Guide – 20,000 views (2023 and 2024 to date)
  • TUS OER Index 700 items. In October 2024 the OER index was relaunched with additional content and subject areas. The Index link has been updated here accordingly. 
  • TUS OER Staff Survey – 70 responses to 2023 survey
  • Evidence Informed Staff Engagement – use of survey data to enhance the OER Library Guide and Index and to inform training and engagement
  • Open Education Policy – draft and consultation

DOERs Project

  • OER Staff Survey – aligned survey disseminated across all sites
  • Training Sessions Across Sites – both online and face-to-face delivery
  • Local Customisation – tailoring of training for each site, in collaboration with local Library staff, to showcase local OERs and to meet local needs
  • Zenodo – sharing of DOERs project resources and maximising impact
  • Sharing and Learning – A&SL Conference and OER24 Conference
